PELVIC FLOOR THERAPY

WHAT IS PELVIC FLOOR DYSFUNCTION?

Pelvic floor problems can occur in any stage of life in both men and women, but commonly occur due to  pregnancy, labour and postpartum recovery. This is due to many changes happening to the body on a physiological and hormonal level that can greatly affect how the core and pelvic floor muscles are responding to daily life and exercise. The physical strain of labour and birth as well as medical interventions can also result in injury of the pelvic floor.

How do I know if I have pelvic floor injury?

If you are pregnant, have given birth to a baby (vaginally or C-section), undertake strenuous exercise or heavy lifting, have issues with constipation or are over 50; you are at risk of experiencing pelvic floor dysfunction.

Pelvic floor dysfunction can present as:

• Bladder incontinence (urinary)

• Bowel incontinence (faecal)

• Constipation

• Organ prolapse painful intercourse

• Haemorrhoids

• Diastasis recti / abdominal separation, pelvic pain or heaviness

• Back pain

What does Pelvic Floor Therapy involve?

Pelvic Floor Therapy at Odyssey Health & Wellbeing utilises the modality of Kinesiology to assess, correct and rehabilitate the pelvic floor muscles, abdominal muscles, pelvic ligaments and align the surrounding skeletal structure of the pelvis. The positioning and functioning of associated organs, such as the bowel, bladder & uterus are also considered, and any psychological aspects and associated birth trauma will be identified and cleared.

A Pelvic Floor Therapy session may include neurological muscle reset, behavioural strategies, manual therapies, therapeutic exercise, education, functional re-training, scar tissue integration,  nutritional advice, hypertonic muscle release and uterine lift techniques, flower essences and Emotional Stress Release techniques. Each session is different and tailored to a client’s individual needs. Effective and safe home exercises to strengthen or relax the pelvic floor muscles may also be administered if required.

What about Kegel Exercises?

It is a common belief that all pelvic floor symptoms are a result of weakness in the pelvic floor muscles, and many people are prescribed Kegel exercises as a treatment to strengthen their pelvic floor. What many people don’t know is that symptoms of pelvic floor problems such as incontinence or pelvic pain can come from both weak and hypertonic pelvic floor muscles. Hypertonic muscles are those that are overactive, tight/contracted and shorted. Therefore, Kegel exercises should not be prescribed to everyone as if done incorrectly or when hypertonic muscles are present, they can be ineffective and counterproductive. During your pelvic floor therapy session, we will conduct a hypertonic muscle release if overactive or tight pelvic floor muscles are deemed to be the issue. Home exercises that are safe and beneficial for your current condition will then be determined.

Scar Tissue Release Therapy

What is Scar Tissue Release and how can it benefit?

Scar Tissue Release Therapy is a gentle and effective technique used to decrease discomfort, fascial adhesions, dark coloring or congestion of scar tissue.  While not every scar presents a problem, many do and sometimes unrelated symptoms people have who have had a C-section can be traced back to their scar. If your body doesn’t breakdown scar tissue completely, it will often spread — triggering your body to compensate. Any kink, pull or restriction in one area can affect everything else. If your movements are restricted, your muscles will be forced to work harder. If your nerves are trapped, your circulation can be restricted — and so on. The reason for this is because you’re essentially held together by one huge single sheet of connective tissue, or fascia. This fascia wraps around your entire body like an intricate spider web and influences the way you function — from your muscles and your bones, to your organs, nerves, veins and arteries.

What is involved in Scar Tissue Release therapy?

Adhered tissues are released and then realigned from their starting point, which is the visible scar, to their end point — where the line of frozen fascia stops.

Collagen Induction Therapy / Skin Needling

Collagen Induction Therapy, or Skin Needling, is a cutting edge treatment that harnesses your body’s natural powers of healing to tighten and repair damaged skin and achieve incredible results. It is an organic way of rebuilding collagen and elastin in the skin and promoting the regeneration of skin cells through a natural healing process.  As our skin ages it becomes loose and less elastic. This is caused by the reduction of fibroblast cells, the building blocks of collagen proteins that help keep our skin cells strong and connected. Wrinkles, sagging skin and discolouration make the complexion appear very dull. We can’t stop the ageing process but we can slow it down. Micro-needling is a safe and chemical-free method to trigger new collagen production. Tiny shallow needles puncture the outer layer of skin to create a controlled skin injury. This micro trauma to the skin will stimulate your body to produce new collagen and elastin. The freshly produced collagen rejuvenates the skin filling in lines and resulting in an overall improvement in the appear. Wrinkles, acne, texture and tightness removing the wrinkles, scars and stretch marks. Skin needling is a safe, tested and reliable procedure that doesn’t require any downtime.

What can Collagen Induction Therapy/Skin Needling help with?

• Wrinkles & fine lines

• Scars- Post Surgical/ Trauma

Dermablading / Epidermal Levelling

Dermablading, also known as Epidermal Levelling is a non-invasive skin rejuvenation treatment designed to make skin smoother, healthier and more youthful. Dermaplaning is an deep exfoliating treatment that provides an alternative to harsh chemical peels and lasers and is a good choice for anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding. The dermablading treatment is done by  using a surgical blade to gently, yet thoroughly exfoliate the outer layer of dead skin cells as well as remove fine facial hair commonly known as “peach fuzz”. A noticeable improvement is immediate with smoother texture and fresh skin appearance. Hair returns softly and will not become coarser or thicker because of the treatment. Products penetrate the skin more effectively following this treatment and makeup sits on the skin flawlessly. This treatment can be done every 4 weeks if desired.

What can Epidermal Levelling / Dermablading assist with?
